Bad Breath – what is bad breath

The term “biliousness” may not be a strictly scientific word but hearing it calls bad breath, biliousness, bad breath tongue , fight bad breath,to the mind of every man, woman and older child in North Carolina a certain definite and unhappy picture.

By whatever name it may be called there is lack of appetite, a sense of malaise, indisposition to either mental or physical activity, drowsiness, often giddiness, a bad taste in the mouth and a bad breath, the tongue is covered with a rather thick slimy coating, there is inactivity of the bowels and a peculiar “bilious” color in the skin, dark circles under the eyes and usually there is a severe and distressing headache. Sooner or later there will be nausea and vomiting. The vomited matter is a liquid, yellow, or greenish yellow in color and as “bitter as gall.” This condition has been seen by every one and experienced by most persons.

A condition of this sort confronts the “family doctor” more often, perhaps, than all others combined.

Gallstones forming in the gall bladder sometimes stop up the gall ducts and prevent the flow of bile into the intestines. This dammed up bile is then reabsorbed into the blood and carried throughout the system and deposited in every tissue of the body. .This deposited bile pigment is what gives to the skin and the whites of the eyes that “yellow as a pumpkin” jaundiced color.

In at least a great many cases of so called “biliousness” there is a slightly analagous condition caused by a concentration of the bile. This interferes with its normal flow and results in its reabsorption into the blood, to be partly deposited in the tissues and partly to be re-eliminated by the liver. With each cycle, of course, it becomes more and more concentrated. In biliousness the bile is not dammed up as in gallstones but because of the impeded flow of the thickened bile there is reabsorption into the blood and a deposit of bile pigment into the tissues.

Because of the inactivity of the bowels in this condition there is necessarily a reabsorption also of the poisons from uneliminated waste in the intestines and this poison or toxin together with the reabsorbed bile gives rise to many of the symptoms noticed.

Inseparably linked with the word biliousness is that other word, calomel. Calomel has a double action. It is a purgative and also a cholagogue (bile driver), hence calomel in “biliousness” empties the intestinal tract and also liquefies the bile and stimulates the liver cells to excrete more bile. Thus with the intestines emptied the bile ducts and gall bladder emptied and the liver cells filtering out of the blood the accumulated bile the condition speedily clears up.

Calomel, however, has its disadvantages. It is of itself a very poor purgative and should never be taken, except upon the specific advice of a physician. When taken into the stomach and absorbed into the blood it is an excellent stimulant to liver activity. Its absorption is rather slow, hence should be taken in the minimum needed doses to accomplish this purpose and given time to be absorbed before a purgative is taken to empty the bowels.

Epsom salts and castor oil are excellent purgatives. They do quickly and thoroughly empty the intestinal tract but they have no stimulating action on the liver and do not liquefy the bile. These drugs by themselves will not clear up the symptoms of the condition popularly known as biliousness.

If, however, the bowel contents are never allowed to stagnate, then biliousness is much less likely to occur, and such drugs are much more valuable in preventing biliousness than in curing it. In recent years a mechanical method has been devised of draining the gall bladder without the use of purgation. It consists in the passage of a small tube by swallowing it very like a stomach tube through the stomach and into the duodenum (the upper small intestine). The procedure is simple and usually gives the patient little inconvenience but does require some time. In cases where indicated it often gives most happy results.

“Biliousness” may not be the proper name for it but the condition described is very real and very common. It is relieved by anything that empties the bowels to stop further toxemia and by emptying the gall bladder and clearing from the body tissues the accumulated bile and waste products.

Here’s How To Fight Bad Breath

How many of us have been on a hot date and connected with them only to be embarrassed by bad breath? Let’s admit it first impressions are everything How To Fight Bad Breathand bad breath isn’t acceptable till the third date. Obviously the best way to get rid of bad breath is to keep mints on hand – but what happens when you forget them?

First let’s talk about what causes bad breath. It is caused by bacteria that lives in your mouth. This bacteria will produce hydrogen sulfide – which smells very similar to rotten eggs. That is why bad breath smells so incredibly bad. The bacteria enjoys living in places that are warm and your mouth is just the spot that it loves.

The best way to eliminate bad breath and to counteract the bacteria is to reduce the amount of hydrogen sulfide that is produced. Dr. Kenichi Hojo of Tsurumi University in Yokohama, Japan did his own research on the matter of eliminating bad breath. He recruited a few people and asked them to change a few of the things that they eat.

They were told to eat 3 ounces of sugarless plain yogurt twice a day for a total of 6 weeks. The results showed that 80% of the volunteers had in fact reduced the amount of hydrogen sulfide that the bacteria in their mouth was creating. It is believed that the live bacteria in the yogurt overcame the bacteria in the mouth. Thus it was able to reduce bad breath.

Not just any yogurt will work. You must eat the type that has no sugar and is not flavored. There must also be live cultures in it. You can purchase special yogurt that says on the label ‘live cultures’. The main active bacteria that will work is ‘lactobacillus bulgaricus’ and ‘Streptococcus thermopiles’. The best place to find it would be a grocery store or health food store.

The only bad part about this natural bad breath treatment is that the yogurt will taste very funny to you to begin with. But you will only be eating 3 ounces day and eventually will grow fond of the taste. At least we hope so.

This is only one common natural cure for bad breath. The other way to eliminate it is to clean your tongue. Most of the bacteria in your mouth live on your tongue. You can clean it by using a tongue scrapper or a toothbrush. I know that it sounds painful – but a tongue scrapper is your best bet for this. It is thin and has the ability to reach farther back in your mouth to the end of your tongue. All you need to do is gently scrape the tongue and remove the bacteria.

Bad Breath In Toddlers & Children

It seems strange to think of the fact that toddlers would ever have problems bad breath in toddlers, bad breath infantswith bad breath but a lot of parents have started noticing that their children are having a problem way before they are ready to start brushing their teeth and before they are able to use mouthwash.

If this is the case, what exactly can such parents do when they find out that their toddlers have bad breath? Are any products available which are safe enough to be used by such toddlers? Prior to giving an answer to these questions, it is essential to determine the reason why these toddlers have foul breath and other things that should be looked out for.

The safety of your child is paramount when thinking about the problem of bad breath. Children shouldn’t have to use products meant for adults such as mouthwashes and rinses because these products may be dangerous to them.

A lot of these products tend to contain alcohol or other such things which may be detrimental to children and their developing systems. A number of much more effective and safer ways of combating bad breath in young children exist. If you are skeptical, you can always contact your doctor or dentist for confirmation of which products to use.

Remember that most cases are caused by the things they’re eating and by decaying bits of food remaining in their mouths that they can’t get out the way adults do, with flossing and brushing. If your toddler still has a bottle, the formula he or she is drinking can dry on the inside of the mouth and cause a very foul odor.

Foods which are somewhat responsible for bad breath in adults such as broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables may also result in bad breath where young children are concerned. Such foods tend to give off various enzymes and chemicals which create a resultant bad odor.

In order to assist in stopping the bad breath problem in toddlers, you should make sure they are properly hydrated, this way they will have enough saliva and so they will be able to rinse out the dried particles and formula with their own saliva. Always keep a bottle or cup of water handy.

Certain cases of smelly breath may be caused when a baby breathes through their mouth instead of their nose. This will then result in the mouth drying up which then causes halitosis. Other conditions which you should check out for are blockages of the sinus cavity or sinusitis, post nasal drip, or any other condition that would cause improper breathing. A pediatrician can also perform a thorough exam and instruct you on how to handle this problem.

Parents shouldn’t lose hope when their children have bad breath, what they need to do is to ascertain the cause of these bad breath problems and then use the appropriate solutions to eliminate the problems. That is the safe and right way to go.

Bad Breath In Children

Children suffer from bad breath? If they do, as a parent, you will likely to be wondering about Bad Breath In Children, bad breath bacteriabad breath in children, as in what causes it and what to do to cure it. Bad breath can be a serious health concern depending on the cause of it, however, sometimes it is not the health issue that bugs these children.

As adults, we probably understand that having breath that is less than perfect can be devastating. Some children can be merciless and they could be teasing your own child constantly. This could easily lead to your child having very low self-esteem because of this problem.

The fact is that bad breath amongst children is very common and usually has some very basic causes. There are also many things that a parent and child can do to address this problem as well.

Oral Hygiene
Like adults, most cases of bad breath in kids are caused by a buildup of germs and bacteria in the mouth. This can be from improper or sporadic brushing and flossing, as adults are usually more conscientious about this routine than children typically are.

It’s important for a parent to not just instruct their children on proper oral hygiene but to oversee it as well – children’s attention spans are typically less than desirable and they can forget to brush the back teeth, the tongue, and so on. A parent might also not be concerned with brushing when it comes to baby teeth, but such neglect is sometimes the cause for these smelly breaths. It’s important for young children to brush and rinse even if they’re going to lose those teeth eventually.

Allergies and Infections
Allergies, sinus infections, and poor diet can also contribute to bad breath in kids. Sugary beverages, including milk and juice, cause bacteria and germs to build up in the mouth and this cause bad breath. It’s best for children to get in the habit of drinking water, or of rinsing their mouth out when they have sugary beverages.

They also need to be checked for allergies and tonsillitis on a regular basis as well; children are more prone to these things since their immune system is not fully developed as of yet. These things can all cause bad breath in children, but only a doctor or dentist can check for problems with the tonsils or adenoids, or give the child a test for allergies.

If children learn and practice good oral hygiene, this can cut down on cases of bad breath in children; it’s important that they learn to do this properly and that they continue this routine on a regular basis. And for chronic, severe, or children with bad breath, child bad breathconsistent cases of bad breath, it’s time to schedule an appointment with a dentist.

How To Stop Bad Breath

Bad breath treatment

Bad breath or commonly referred to as halitosis, is a very embarrassing condition and those who suffer from it would usually have a very difficult social life. Forget about getting a date, talking to people or trying to be close to them is already hard enough no thanks to your smelly breath which would either make them crinkle in disgust or turn them away completely.

Basically you would feel as if you’ve been slapped right in the face whenever you try to speak to someone. It’s extremely depressing and I can very much relate to this, so I’ve decided to share a few simple bad breath remedies Stop Bad Breath, how to stop bad breathwhich can hopefully produce positive results for fellow sufferers.

1.Brush your teeth regularly – Bacteria feed on food particles stuck or hidden between the teeth and as a result of this, sulfur compounds are created which cause unpleasant odor in your breath. Regular brushing especially after every meal can help remove food particles from your teeth thus preventing bacteria from creating sulfur compounds. It is highly recommended that you brush your teeth with toothpaste that contains chlorine dioxide which is a highly bad breath in children, dental mouthwasheffective chemical compound for treating bad breath.

2.Gum stimulator – This is a definitely one of the best way to remove food particles from your mouth which can cause bad breath. Regular string-like floss can be a dud because you would inevitably miss a few teeth when flossing with them but not likely so with gum stimulator. If you have no idea what a gum stimulator is or how it looks like, no worries. Simply drive or walk to the nearest store and head over to the ‘Health and Beauty sections’.

Now that’s where you would normally find some. They are basically these little sticks with small teardrops on each end. Using them to floss your teeth is so much more effective compared to the typical string floss.

3.Consume sugarless yogurt – According to a study by Dr. Kenichi Hojo of Tsurumi University which was detailed at 83rd of General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, sugarless yogurt has the ability to considerably reduce odor producing compound like hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is a major culprit of many bad breath cases. So what are you waiting for? Go and have some yogurt! What better way to cure bad breath than with something as tasty as a cup of sugarless yogurt?

4.Drink plenty of water – It is a well know fact that dry mouth can lead to unpleasant breath. You should always keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. You want to avoid bacteria from thriving in your mouth otherwise; you’ll get bad breath very quickly. When you are properly hydrated, you produce more saliva which helps prevent bacteria from flourishing.

5.Tea – What can I do to stop to bad breath? By drinking a cup of warm tea? You bet! Believe it or not tea can actually help you in your quest to combat bad breath. Certain compounds in tea such as polyphenols, theaflavins, and catechins are highly effective against bacteria growth which can cause bad breath.

Foods That Cause Bad Breath

Foods That Cause Bad Breath

Bad breath is generally caused by bacteria, which releases sulfur compounds, when certain

Foods That Cause Bad Breath,

changes are made to its environment. In most cases, these changes are caused by food.

The fact that Garlic and Onion causes bad breath isn’t news for anyone. But, do you know why they cause bad breath? It’s because both garlic and onions have sulfur compounds.

Sulfur is often used by nature to create odors. Everybody knows about the skunk for example. The odors that he is releasing are done as a defense mechanism. All that smell is created by his organism with the help of sulfur compounds (one of them is skatoles). If you let food out of the fridge for too long it will become spoiled. This happens because the food’s proteins are broken down by anaerobic bacteria. The smell of sour milk for example is caused by the same type of bacteria that causes bad breath in people. And the same goes for meat as well.

There are four types of foods that boost the production of sulfur. They’re listed all below:

Drying Agents: in most cases alcohol is the drying agent of choice when it comes to food. Obviously, alcohol is also used in most adult drinks, like wine, beer or hard liquor. The real problem is that alcohol is also used exactly in the product that should be fighting the problem, mouthwash.

In chemical terms, alcohol is a desiccant. It’s often used in laboratories to reach places that are harder to clean, like beakers or test tubes. The same thing happens in the oral cavity. Something else you should know is that the alcohol doesn’t even serve a purpose in the mouthwash. It’s just used to make the mouthwash look appealing in the shop. While all the coloring chemicals and flavoring they use isn’t soluble in water, but it is in alcohol.

Even though cigarettes aren’t food, by smoking you’re sure to have bad breath. It’s even worse than alcohol.

Protein Foods That Are Dense: Everyone knows that you get bad breath if you eat dairy foods. An article I once read said that in South California, two thirds of all people are lactose intolerant. Millions and millions of people worldwide can’t eat dairy because their organism doesn’t breakdown their proteins. If they do eat dairy, amino acids will build up in their organism. Then they will become sulfur compounds, with the help of the throat and tongue bacteria. In a few cases, the same thing will also happen when some people eat chicken, beef or fish.

There are also some rare cases where people can’t break down the proteins from beans. This disease is called TMA (comes from Trimethylaminuria), though it’s also called “Fish Odor Syndrome”. The name comes from the smell, which is the same as that produced by fish that are decaying. The odor has in it nitrogen compounds and sulfur compounds. Those that have TMA aren’t allowed foods with dense protein or beans.

Sugars: it would be really nice if you could just chew some M&Ms and lose the bad breath. Or how great would it be to get rid of Hershey Kisses. Those that are producing ALTOIDS would want you to believe this is possible. Besides Altoids, there are other products that try to convince people of the same thing, without a real basis. It has no basis in real science and it doesn’t make much sense either. You do feel a MINT taste when you put a MINT flavor on your taste buds, but it’s only a taste. The sugar that Altoids has will help the bacteria release sulfur compounds, so their claim of helping you get rid of the bad breath is just wrong.

Besides that, the bacteria can also use the present sugars and make glycan strands. These contribute to the creation of plaque on your teeth, which causes gum disease and tooth decay. It also boosts the bad breath. Because you can’t really smell your own breath, you think everything is alright, feeling the mint on your taste buds, but not feeling the breath that others are smelling.

The conclusion is that you should avoid mints, candies and chewing gum if you want to keep a fresh breath.

Acidic Foods: below are some of the foods that you should avoid:

Coffee – regular and decaf coffee have acids
Tomato Juice

Citrus Juices – Grapefruit, Pineapple and Orange Juice

Acidic foods are such a problem because bacteria reacts in a bad way to their environment.

Bad Breath Control Tips

This article gives you a few pointers about what can cause bad breath.

In the vast majority of all cases, disorders in taste and bad breath are caused Bad Breath Control, breath odorby anaerobic bacteria, which produces sulfur and lives in your throat, below the tongue and in the tonsils, if you didn’t have them removed.

When the environment they live in changes in some way, these bacteria will react by releasing sulfur compounds, which taste bad and smell the same. Among these sulfur compounds you will find methyl mercaptan (smell like sweaty socks), cadaverine (smells like garbage that is old), putrescine, and sulfide (which is a bit like eggs that have gone rotten).

The best way to actually get rid of bad breath is to make sure that the places where these bacteria live aren’t friendly to their presence. If they can’t live there, the sulfur compounds they usually produce will disappear as well, and you will be able to enjoy food and get rid of the bad breath.

This article gives you a few pointers about what can cause bad breath. Taking steps towards eliminating these problems will make sure that you don’t have bad breath anymore.

A few of the possible causes for halitosis and bad breath are:
A mouth that is dry
Saliva that is thick
Having too much mucus in your throat
Using a post nasal drip
Keeping a high protein diet (red meat, dairy, beans and so on)
Smoking cigarettes
Alcohol (you might be surprised, but the alcohol from the mouthwash counts as well)
Changes in your hormones
Pills that make your mouth dry (high blood pressure medication, anti-depressants, anti-histamines, and so on)
Having diabetes
Certain diets, like those based on a lot of proteins or the Atkins diet.
Using a lot of products for the mouth, which are old fashioned (those that have either Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or alcohol in the mix).
